
Northern Michigan University is located in Marquette, on the state’s Upper Peninsula near the southern shore of Lake Superior. All students receive a ThinkPad or iBook laptop included in their tuition. The Northern Michigan Wildcats compete in the NCAA II and several athletic conferences, including the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA). Northern Michigan University is also home to the only U.S. Olympic Education Center in the country, where athletes are trained in speedskating, boxing, and Greco-Roman wrestling, among other sports, replacement diplomas.
Graduate students can enroll in programs through the NMU business school, nursing school, and more. Notable alumni of Northern Michigan University include Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks; snowboarder Nick Baumgartner, a member of the U.S. Olympic snowboarding team and a gold medalist at the Winter X Games; and renowned architect John Lautner.
