In 1957, Laurentian University was established, renamed the University of Sudbury and began to award degrees, Laurentian University diploma. In 1960, a provincial act provided Laurentian University with a corporate structure as a bilingual union composed of representatives of the United Church, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Anglican Communion. The Laurentian University Association includes the University of Sudbury, Huntington University established by the United Church in 1960, and Sonello University established by the Anglican Church in 1961. Hearst University affiliated with Laurentian University in 1963, and Algoma University College joined in 1965.
